EPEX SPOT Trader Certification
To gain authorization to trade on our markets, even occasionally, each trader needs to be certified. Certification is obtained when passing our trader exam. The exam is a guarantee for Exchange members that their traders know our markets. This significantly reduces risks of non-appropriate trading behavior.
The EPEX SPOT Trading Handbook provides comprehensive knowledge about trading on EPEX SPOT markets, from Day-Ahead and Intraday auctions to Intraday continuous trading, the French Capacity market and the Guarantees of Origin Spot market. It offers detailed information on the operational aspects of the power market, rules and regulations, products, markets, including online trading demos and fallback procedures.
Access is restricted to Members active on EPEX SPOT markets. New members receive one free training access in the first year of membership, available with the first training purchased.

E-Learning offer
Our training courses are designed by experts and combine knowledge from EPEX SPOT and external specialists. The training programs are interactive courses that are available in English, German and French, open to everyone who is interested in learning more about power markets. Upon subscription, you will get unlimited access to the training platform for one year. The portal can be accessed from any place and at any time via a computer or tablet with internet access.
Basics of the Power System
This series of training modules covers basic questions related to the power system, power generation and consumption. You will find explanations of the dynamics of supply and demand, their influence on prices and balancing, the economic organization and operational characteristics of the power system. Learn about the fundamentals of power generation, the roles and technical characteristics of generation units and the influence on energy costs and electricity prices. You will also be able to better understand the patterns of power consumption over time, the impacts of weather, tariff structures or major media events. An outlook is given on the potential impact of electric vehicles and energy efficiency policies, to mention just a few topics.

Market & Trading
These modules focus on power markets and electricity trading, with an overview of types of exchanges, involved parties, characteristics of products, trading, market results, settlement and delivery. It explains the functioning of Market Coupling, the involved main players, its principles and benefits as well as a brief presentation of the EUPHEMIA algorithm, used to calculate market prices across Europe.
In addition to this, it gives insight into calculation methods of interconnection capacities and explains the basics of the Flow-Based methodology. This series includes case studies, operational trading examples and price behavior. It explains the functioning of the Capacity mechanism including the obligations of suppliers and the allocation of capacity credits.
A Trading Handbook for non-members is also available within this training series: It gives detailed information on the operational aspects of the power market, rules, regulation, products, markets, including case studies, examples of trading, price behavior and basics of the Capacity mechanism. Furthermore, the functioning of clearing and ECC’s role as central counterparty are outlined.

Flow-Based Methodology
The series of four training modules about the Flow-Based methodology has been developed in cooperation with the French Transmission System Operator Rte.
The series starts off with a basic introduction, which will help to ‘Refresh your knowledge about TSOs and ATC’. You will find answers to questions such as: What is the role of TSOs, how do they calculate and allocate cross-border capacity and what are the timeframes of their activity?
The second training course goes deeper into the topic. ‘Understand the Flow-Based methodology’ provides answers to the basic questions: What are the general concepts, what is the difference between physical and commercial flows, what are net positions and PTDF?
The focus of the third training, ‘Learn more about Flow-Based capacity calculation’, is on calculation of provided data by TSOs, critical elements monitoring, PTDFs and GSKs, Shadow Auctions, Intraday ATCs, Hybrid Price coupling, and much more.
Finalize the series with ‘Grasp Flow-Based parameters and their impact for traders’. This course gives a comparison before and after the introduction of the Flow-Based methodology, highlights the impacts on Market Coupling and power trading and outlines the specificities of market price formation under flow-based constraints.
